According to a local media outlet, Cheng expressed optimism about the tourism sector’s performance during the summer holiday period. In addition to the strong visitor numbers, the hotel occupancy rate from January to June this year was around 88 percent. Cheng believes that this rate will exceed 90 percent during the peak summer season, reflecting robust demand. Cheng also noted that there have been no reports from the industry about staffing shortages. He expressed confidence that the tourism sector has adequately prepared for the busy season, ensuring sufficient personnel to accommodate the influx of visitors. According to previous projections, Macau is expected to receive 33 million visitors this year and from January to May Macau already received over 14 million visitors.

MGTO says Macau welcomed 16.7 million visitors in first six months of 2024 by Pierce Chan Tue 16 Jul 2024 www.asgam.com/index.php/2024/07/16/mgto-says-macau-welcomed-16-7-million-visitors-in-first-six-months-of-2024/Provisional data from the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) shows that the number of visitor arrivals to Macau from 1 January to 30 June 2024 was about 16,729,000 at a daily average of 91,918 – up 43.6% compared with the same period in 2023 and back to 82.5% of 1H19 levels. Of those the 16.7 million visitors, nearly 1.17 million foreign visitors entered Macau, up 146.4% year-on-year or 67.2% of pre-COVID levels. This follows a series of recent roadshows in international destinations, including Tokyo, Singapore, Jakarta, Seoul, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur. According to the MGTO, the average hotel occupancy rate from January to May 2024 reached 84.3%, representing an increase of 7.7 percentage points compared with the same period in 2023 but down 7.2 percentage points compared with 2019. In terms of hotel guests, the 6,135,000 guests recorded from January to May represented an increase of 25.0% compared to the same period in 2023 and 6.0% compared to the same period in 2019. The MGTO pointed out that this year marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Macao SAR. The Macau SAR Government has launched special offers to further attract international visitors, including the provision of 250,000 tickets for flights, cross-border transportation, hotel accommodation, dining and entertainment, and amusement rides.
