Macau ranked as the most satisfying destination for travelers from China in 1Q24 Viviana Chan - May 29, 2024 agbrief.com/news/macau/29/05/2024/macau-ranked-as-the-most-satisfying-destination-for-travelers-from-china-in-1q24/A survey conducted by the China Tourism Academy shows that Macau was ranked as the most satisfying destination for outbound travelers from mainland China in the first quarter of 2024. The news was shared on the institution’s official WeChat account on Tuesday. While Macau’s overall score actually fell during the first quarter compared to 2023 (when it reached 84.09 points, taking third place in the ranking), its score of 83.49 in 1Q24 landed it in first place, as other regions saw declines. This is the first time that Macau has been ranked as the most satisfying destination for outbound travelers from mainland China. The survey also mentions that mainland residents are enthusiastic about traveling to Hong Kong and Macau, while the living radius of Hong Kong and Macau residents continues to expand into the mainland. Additionally, the ‘one-hour living circle’ of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area is accelerating. In response to the news, the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) expressed its pleasure in seeing mainland travelers giving positive feedback and overall satisfaction with the Macau travel experience. The MGTO attributes this achievement to the joint efforts of various sectors in Macau. Macau received around 28.23 million visitors in 2023, with a daily average of 77,000 – indicating a recovery of approximately 70 percent compared to pre-pandemic 2019. Mainland China continues to be the major source market for Macau, accounting for over 67.5 percent of the total. For the current year, Macau expects to receive at least 30 million visitors. The city continues to rebrand itself away from gaming, focusing on events and MICE, while gaming is concentrated on the mass market and attracting foreign punters.
