Macau reports gaming revenues of MOP$19.33 billion in January, second highest since reopening by Ben Blaschke, Thu 1 Feb 2024 www.asgam.com/index.php/2024/02/01/macau-reports-gaming-revenues-of-mop19-33-billion-in-january/Macau’s gaming industry is off to a hot start in 2024, with the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) reporting gross gaming revenues of MOP$19.33 billion (US$2.40 billion) in January. Coming off a year of recovery in 2023 which saw Macau’s GGR reach 63% of pre-COVID levels at MOP$183.1 billion (US$22.7 billion), the January result represents a 4.1% increase over December gaming revenues, generating plenty of momentum ahead of the upcoming Chinese New Year holiday period. It was also 67% higher than January 2023, when GGR was MOP$11.58 billion (US$1.44 billion) although still 34.3% down on the January 2019 GGR figure of MOP$29.4 billion (US$3.65 billion). Only one month in 2023, October, saw Macau operators generate more GGR than the January 2024 GGR result. Investment bank Morgan Stanley recently predicted Macau-wide GGR to grow by 28% year-on-year in 2024 to around 80% of pre-COVID levels, albeit with greater profitability given the industry’s transition away from VIP and to a mass-focused model. The DICJ revealed last month that mass gaming tables had accounted for 75% of 4Q23 GGR – up from below 53% in 4Q19.

Macau GGR hits $2.4 billion in first month of 2024 February 1, 2024 agbrief.com/news/macau/01/02/2024/macau-ggr-hits-2-4-bln-january-2024/Macau’s gross gaming revenue (GGR) amounted to MOP19.3 billion ($2.4 billion) in the first month of 2024, 77 percent of the MOP24.9 billion ($3 billion) reported in January of 2019, before the pandemic. According to data released by the local regulator, the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ), the January tally marked a 67 percent increase from the same month of the previous year. The result also reflects a 4 percent increase from December’s MOP18.5 billion ($2.3 billion). Only one month in 2023 surpassed the results of January, 2024, with October – which included the National Day holiday week – MOP19.5 billion ($2.4 billion). For the whole of 2023, Macau’s casino GGR reached MOP183.05 billion ($22.68 billion), indicating a 333.8 percent surge compared to the same period the previous year. Morgan Stanley forecasted that Macau’s mass market gross gaming revenue will surpass 120 percent of pre-pandemic levels by the end of 2024, potentially leading to EBITDA figures reaching (or slightly exceeding) 2019 levels. The year of 2023 marked a resurgence for Macau, stepping out of the shroud of the pandemic and the related regulations which effectively shuttered the city for three years. It also marked the first year of the six concessionaires’ new gaming licenses, with the operators adapting to the new environment which has shunned junkets, shifted to a mass market model and aims to attract more foreign punters. The results have surpassed the Macau government’s expectations, with the SAR’s Chief Executive in December noting his expectation for MOP180 billion ($22.4 billion), some MOP50 billion ($6.22 billion) more than the government had previously expected. Under the new gaming licenses, if Macau’s annual GGR reaches or surpasses MOP180 billion, the six concessionaires are obliged to increase their MOP109 billion ($13.48 billion) non-gaming spending by up to 20 percent. However, the SAR’s Chief Executive has been reticent about disclosing the exact requirements of the operators once the threshold is passed.

$2.4B is a really good month, more then I thought it would be. Feb also has an extra day and CNY is all in Feb where I think last year it was at the end of Jan beginning of Feb. I would think February would be over $2.6B which would be a 4 year high. Anyone else have anything to add?
