Translation: Buy things that are sound and have potential when everybody hates them, and sell things that everybody loves and can't get enough of. Why it's difficult: It's human nature to invest in success, with a high and rising stock price and the things that experts (analysts) say we should buy. It's also human nature to steer clear of anything that is not successful, the stock price has fallen and is low, and which experts say we should avoid. Markets and stocks peak when the most people are optimistic about them and have bought them, and markets/stocks hit bottom when people are the most pessimistic and have sold them. The Buffett Example: His mantra: "be bold when others are fearful and be fearful when others are bold" It never ceases to amaze me that EVERYBODY wants to know what a hugely successful investor like Buffett is buying... but when they find out, they almost uniformly exclaim: "why the hell would anybody want to buy THAT!!"

My comments are in 'no way' an endorsement of what I would call the Bitcoin bubble... aka the tulip trade. I was simply trying to understand the mechanics and let people know what I did not know... There are multiple crypto currencies, not just Bitcoin.
The "fixed supply" is actually not fixed, but the allowance for inflating the supply entails letting the currency holders vote to inflate it. That's a distributed (non-centralized) protection against some authority "printing money".
There's also code-forks enabling more supply. (someone programs a separate strain of the bitcoin code)
One of my best friends started mining bitcoins very early in the launch. I chuckled about it.....warned him to get out.
He got a job with a startup bitcoin brokerage and kept his bitcoins. He stopped mining as the hash difficulty began to exceed his mining rig's capabilities.
His equity is now worth millions and his bitcoin stash is truly a fortune.
...and I'm again urging him to take some $ off the table.

Whether bitcoin itself endures, the architecture of crypto currency is an innovation that will disrupt and enhance many aspects of commerce. Blockchain is the buzzword and the Merkel Tree is the architecture in play en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merkle_treeI'm digging deep into this because it is ripe territory for investment and huge gains to those who catch it early. The potential for applications are vast - and it also thwarts the need for (and power of) centralized control. THAT is a win win in my opinion. |
